The circle crop is the part people forget. Anything in the corners of your square is cut off, and a logo designed for a rectangle usually loses its edges.

Design for 48 pixels, not 800
Almost every place your avatar appears, it is tiny. Next to a comment it's 48 pixels — about the size of a full stop at arm's length. That constraint decides everything:
- One element. A face, a single letter, one simple shape. A detailed logo becomes a smudge.
- No text beyond one or two characters. Your channel name will not be readable. Don't try.
- Strong contrast against both light and dark. YouTube has light and dark themes; an avatar that vanishes on one of them is invisible to half your audience. A dark logo on a transparent background disappears in dark mode.
- Keep the subject centred and inside the circle. Leave roughly 10% margin on every side of the square so the crop doesn't clip anything.
The test: shrink your image to 48 pixels wide and look at it next to some text. If you can't tell what it is, neither can anyone else.
How to change my profile picture on YouTube
- YouTube Studio → Customisation → Branding.
- Under Picture, click Change and upload.
- Adjust the crop, then Publish.
Two things to expect. It can take a while to propagate — up to a few hours across all surfaces, so don't panic if comments still show the old one. And it changes the picture on the Google account behind the channel, unless the channel is a Brand Account. If you want the channel's avatar separate from your personal Google photo, the channel needs to be a Brand Account.
Downloading a channel's avatar
Profile pictures are public images, served at several sizes. Useful when you're building a comparison of channels in a niche, putting together a collaboration graphic, or checking how your own reads next to peers.
Downloading someone's avatar to look at it is fine. Using it as your own, or in a way that suggests endorsement, is not — it's their trademark and their likeness.

What an avatar does and doesn't do
- No effect on ranking or discovery. Nobody finds you because of it.
- Real effect on recognition. It's the one piece of your branding that appears everywhere — every comment, every search result, every subscription list. Consistency is worth more than cleverness.
- Changing it costs recognition temporarily. Regular viewers scan for the avatar. Change it and you're briefly invisible to your own audience, so don't do it often.
- Animated avatars aren't supported. Upload a GIF and you get one frame.
