YouTube Banner Size and the Safe Area

Upload 2048 x 1152, but only the middle 1235 x 338 is guaranteed visible

6 min read

Upload 2048 × 1152 pixels, and keep everything important inside the middle 1235 × 338. That inner rectangle is the safe area — the only part guaranteed to be visible on every device. Maximum file size is 6 MB.

The reason banner design goes wrong is that YouTube crops your image differently on TV, desktop, tablet and phone. It doesn't scale one layout down; it shows progressively less of it. Design outside the safe area and your channel name disappears on mobile.

The safe area is the whole job

Think of the banner as two layers:

  • The centre 1235 × 338. Channel name, tagline, upload schedule, anything a viewer must read. This shows everywhere.
  • Everything outside it. Texture, colour, gradient, a continuation of the artwork. Treated as decoration that some viewers will never see.

A common and effective approach is a plain dark or plain black field around a centred lockup. That is why so many people search for a "black background banner" — it isn't a style trend, it's the safe area being handled honestly: nothing is lost when the edges get cropped because there was nothing at the edges.

Search for a YouTube banner size and half the results are a black image with rectangles drawn on it. That is not a design trend — it is the safe area, made visible.

A black-background banner template is a 2048 × 1152 canvas where the area outside the 1235 × 338 safe zone is filled with flat black. Two things follow from that:

  • Nothing is lost when YouTube crops. The edges hold no information, so a phone showing only the middle of the image looks intentional rather than cut off.
  • It works on both YouTube themes. Black sits against the dark theme without a visible seam. A white-background banner is the same trick in reverse and reads well on the light theme, which is why youtube banner size white is searched too — but far less, because most viewers use dark mode.

Building one takes a minute: new document at 2048 × 1152, fill it black, draw a centred 1235 × 338 guide, keep every word inside that guide. That is the entire template that gets sold as a download.

There is one upload size and four crops. The confusion comes from people quoting a crop as if it were the upload size.

DeviceWhat the viewer seesWhat you upload
Mobile1235 × 338 — the safe area, and nothing more2048 × 1152, always
Tablet1855 × 423
Desktop2560 × 423
TVThe full 2048 × 1152

So the answer to "what banner size works for all devices" is the safe area: design for 1235 × 338, upload at 2048 × 1152, and every device gets something that looks deliberate. Mobile is the constraint, because it shows the least.

Make a template once

  1. New document, 2048 × 1152 px.
  2. Draw a centred rectangle 1235 × 338 px. That's your safe area — put it on its own layer and mark it as a guide.
  3. Optionally add the desktop band, 2560 × 423 scaled to fit, to see what desktop viewers get.
  4. Keep text and logos inside the safe rectangle. Let background art run to the edges.
  5. Export as PNG or JPG under 6 MB.

Save that file. Every future banner starts from it, which also keeps your channel visually consistent — worth more than any individual design.

Uploading it

  1. YouTube Studio → Customisation → Branding.
  2. Under Banner image, upload, then use the crop preview.
  3. Check the device previews before publishing. YouTube shows you TV, desktop and mobile — this is where you catch text falling outside the safe area.
  4. Publish.

What actually belongs on a banner

Banners are often over-designed. The ones that work carry at most three things:

  • What the channel is about, in plain words. Not a slogan — a description. "Woodworking for small workshops" beats "Create. Inspire. Build."
  • An upload schedule, if you keep one. This is the single most useful piece of information for a new visitor deciding whether to subscribe.
  • A recognisable visual — your face, your logo, or a consistent colour. Something that makes your channel page identifiable at a glance.

What doesn't belong: social handles nobody will type from a banner, long lists of topics, or a wall of small text that vanishes on mobile anyway.

Look at banners in your niche

Channel art is public, and downloading it at full resolution is the quickest way to see how bigger channels handle the safe area — usually more conservatively than you'd expect.

Things worth knowing

  • Banners have no effect on ranking or discovery. Nobody finds you because of your banner. It converts visitors who already arrived into subscribers.
  • Downloading someone else's banner is fine for study; reusing it is not. It's their copyrighted artwork.
  • Your banner is not your thumbnail. Different specs entirely — thumbnails are 1280 × 720 at 16:9.
  • Test on an actual phone, not just YouTube's preview. It takes ten seconds and catches problems the preview flatters.

FAQ

What is the YouTube banner size?

Upload at 2048 × 1152 pixels, under 6 MB. Keep all text and logos inside the centred 1235 × 338 safe area, which is the only region visible on every device.

What are the YouTube channel banner dimensions?

2048 × 1152 pixels for the file you upload. The dimensions that matter for layout are the 1235 × 338 safe area inside it, because that is the only region every device displays.

What is the YouTube banner safe area?

The centred 1235 × 338 pixel region of a 2048 × 1152 banner. YouTube crops the rest away on smaller screens, so anything a viewer must read has to sit inside it.

Why do so many banners have a plain black background?

Because it makes the cropping invisible. If the area outside the safe zone is a flat colour, nothing is lost when YouTube trims it on mobile — so the banner looks intentional on every device rather than awkwardly cut.

Do I need a YouTube banner maker or a channel art template?

No. A free YouTube channel banner maker saves you drawing two rectangles; that is the whole value. Any editor that opens a 2048 × 1152 canvas will do, and a channel art template is just that canvas with the 1235 × 338 safe area marked. What matters is where your text sits, not which tool drew the box.

What is the YouTube banner size for all devices?

Upload 2048 × 1152 and keep everything readable inside the centred 1235 × 338 safe area. That single file serves mobile, tablet, desktop and TV — YouTube crops it per device, and the safe area is the part every device keeps.

What's the maximum banner file size?

6 MB. If a PNG exceeds it, export as JPG at high quality — banners are photographic enough that the difference won't show.

Why does my banner look cut off on my phone?

Because content was placed outside the 1235 × 338 safe area. Mobile shows the least of the image of any device. Move the text inward and re-upload.

Can I download a channel's banner?

Yes — banners are public images, and the Banner Downloader fetches them at full resolution. Use them to study layout, not to republish.
