YouTube Thumbnail Size and Specs

1280 x 720 is the easy part; designing for 360px is the job

5 min read

1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB. That is YouTube's recommendation and what you should export. The minimum width is 640 pixels; accepted formats are JPG, PNG, GIF and BMP.

Those numbers are the easy part. The part that costs people views is that your thumbnail is almost never displayed at 1280 × 720 — it is displayed at roughly 360 × 202 in search, and smaller still in a sidebar on a phone. Design for the small size and check it there.

Why 1280 × 720 and not larger

Because YouTube downscales everything anyway, and 1280 × 720 is the largest size it stores. Exporting at 1920 × 1080 doesn't hurt — it just gets resized — but it uses more of your 2 MB budget for no visible gain.

Going smaller does hurt. Below 640 pixels wide YouTube may reject the upload outright, and anything upscaled looks soft on a desktop home page where thumbnails render larger than you'd expect.

Design for the size it's actually shown at

This is the single most useful thing on this page. Before you upload, shrink your thumbnail to about 360 pixels wide and look at it. Most thumbnails fail this test.

What survives the shrink:

  • One focal point. A face, an object, a single number. Two competing subjects become mush.
  • Three or four words maximum. A sentence is unreadable at 360 px. If your text needs a comma, it's too long.
  • High contrast between subject and background. Not necessarily bright colours — contrast. Dark subject on light ground works as well as the reverse.
  • Text that isn't at the edges. The bottom-right corner gets covered by the duration badge, and the bottom edge by the progress bar on watched videos. Keep anything important out of the lower right.

What doesn't survive: thin fonts, drop shadows, gradients with low separation, five-element collages, and any text under about 60 px in the 1280-wide original.

A thumbnail template for YouTube, and the safe area

A template is worth having, and it needs exactly two things: a 1280 × 720 canvas and a guide marking the lower-right corner where the duration badge sits. Everything else is design, not spec.

You don't need a paid template pack for that. Create a 1280 × 720 document, draw a rectangle roughly 200 × 60 px in the bottom-right corner as a keep-out zone, save it, and reuse it. Consistency across your thumbnails matters far more than the template you started from — a recognisable style is why regular viewers spot your video in a crowded feed.

Pull the thumbnails that already win

The fastest way to calibrate is to look at what currently ranks for your target search. Download the top results' thumbnails, put them side by side at small size, and yours next to them. The gap is usually obvious in about ten seconds — normally contrast, or too much text.

Uploading a custom thumbnail

  1. YouTube Studio → Content → the video → the pencil icon to edit.
  2. Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file rather than one of the three auto-generated frames.
  3. Save.

Custom thumbnails require a verified account. If the upload option is greyed out, verify your phone number in account settings — that's almost always the cause.

Shorts don't work this way

Shorts are 9:16 vertical, and YouTube does not offer a true custom thumbnail for them in the way it does for long-form. You pick a frame from the video. If a specific frame matters, plan a shot for it while filming — that is the only real control you get.

What thumbnails can and can't do

  • They don't affect ranking directly. They affect click-through rate, which affects how much YouTube keeps showing the video. Indirect but powerful.
  • They can't fix a bad topic. A brilliant thumbnail on a video nobody searched for gets clicks from nobody.
  • Overpromising costs more than it earns. A thumbnail that implies something the video doesn't deliver buys one click and loses the retention that decides distribution.
  • Changing thumbnails on old videos is worth trying, one at a time, with two weeks between changes so you can read the result.

FAQ

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?

1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio, under 2 MB, in JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP. The minimum accepted width is 640 pixels.

How big is a YouTube thumbnail when displayed?

Much smaller than you upload it. Roughly 360 × 202 px in search results and related videos, larger on a desktop home page, smaller in a mobile sidebar. Always preview at around 360 px wide before uploading.

Where do I get a YouTube thumbnail template?

Make one: a 1280 × 720 document with a keep-out rectangle roughly 200 × 60 in the bottom-right, where the duration badge sits. That is the whole template. Paid thumbnail template packs sell layout ideas, not specifications — the specification is one canvas size and one corner to avoid.

What's the maximum thumbnail file size?

2 MB. If your PNG exceeds it, export as JPG at 85–90% quality — the difference is invisible at display size and the file drops by an order of magnitude.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail?

Custom thumbnails need a verified account. Verify your phone number in YouTube account settings and the option appears.

What size are YouTube Shorts thumbnails?

Shorts are 9:16 vertical and don't support a true custom thumbnail upload the way long-form does — you select a frame from the video itself.

Does changing a thumbnail reset the video's performance?

No. Views, watch time and comments are unaffected. Click-through rate will shift, which is the point — change one video at a time so you can attribute the result.
