YouTube Upload
SEO Checker
Scores the title, description, tags and hashtags together against the things that are actually checkable — and is explicit that a good score predicts nothing about ranking, because nothing public could.
- ● Checks before you publish
- ● Truncation on all four surfaces
- ● Description fold and tag budget
- ● Says what it cannot know
New to this? Read the guide before you start.
Four different truncation points, one title. The shortest that still reads is usually the right one.
Title, description and tags — or paste a published video above to load its fields. Everything is scored in your browser as you type; only the optional load button touches the API.
The score measures completeness, and the page says so twice. Every other SEO score implies a ranking prediction it cannot make.
Desktop search cuts at 70, mobile cards at 60, the suggested sidebar at 50, the Shorts overlay at 40. One title has to survive all four.
The biggest single gap, not a list of twelve. A checklist you cannot finish is a checklist nobody uses.
Type the fields directly. The video does not need to exist, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How to
How to check a YouTube upload before publishing
Title, description and tags as you intend to publish them. Add the keyword you are targeting to unlock the placement checks.
It shows which surfaces will cut your title. Losing the end of a title on mobile cards is the most common avoidable mistake here.
The page names the biggest single thing left undone rather than listing everything. Fix it, watch the score move, repeat if it is worth it.
The last few points are worth far less than one better thumbnail or a tighter first thirty seconds. The score is hygiene, not strategy.

What an SEO score can and cannot measure
The number above is a checklist result. It is not a forecast.
YouTube ranks on behaviour: how long people watch, whether they finish, whether they click in the first place, what they do next. None of that exists in a title, a description or a tag list, so no tool reading metadata can predict it — including this one.
What metadata does decide is whether a person who has already been shown your video can understand it. A title cut at 60 characters, a keyword below the description fold, hashtags past the limit that makes YouTube ignore all of them — those are real, mechanical, and fixable in a minute.
So the checks here are deliberately mechanical. Every one is something you can verify yourself by looking at the video. Nothing is weighted by a model, and nothing claims a correlation with views.
The corollary is the advice at the end of the how-to: once the mechanical things are done, more metadata effort has almost no return. The next hour is better spent on the thumbnail or the first thirty seconds — see the YouTube SEO guide.
Limits
What this checker cannot do
Stated twice already because it is the entire misuse of tools like this. Behaviour decides ranking; metadata decides comprehension.
The single highest-leverage asset on an upload, and nothing about it is scoreable from text. It is not in the score at all.
It checks placement, not demand. Whether anyone searches the phrase is a different question, and the Keyword Tool answers it.
The maximum varies with what you supply — keyword checks only exist when you give a keyword. Percentages are meaningful within one upload, not across two.
The weights here are ours, chosen to reflect how visible each thing is to a viewer. Nobody outside YouTube knows the real ones.
A perfectly filled-in upload of a video that loses people at twenty seconds will still fail. The score cannot see the video.
One tool, every intent
However you searched for it, this is the page
People arrive wanting an SEO score, a pre-upload checklist, or to audit a video that is not performing. Same four fields answer all three.
The five minutes before you hit publish
The main use. Everything the checker catches is trivial to fix before upload and annoying to fix after, because editing a title after publication resets nothing but does lose you the first-hours window.
Auditing a video that underperformed
Load it by URL and look at the mechanical gaps first. If the score is already high, the problem is not the metadata — which is itself worth knowing, because it stops you rewriting tags for a week.
Checking a competitor's upload
Load any public video. A competitor scoring badly and outranking you is the clearest possible demonstration that metadata is not what is winning.
Fixing what it finds
Each gap maps to a generator: titles, descriptions and tags, all deterministic.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does a high SEO score mean my video will rank?+
No, and any tool implying otherwise is selling something. YouTube ranks on watch time, retention, click-through and session behaviour — none of which is in the metadata this reads. What the score measures is whether the upload has been filled in properly. It is a pre-flight checklist, not a prediction.
What is actually checkable about YouTube SEO?+
The mechanical things: whether the title survives truncation on each surface, whether your keyword is inside the 150 characters shown before the description fold, whether tags fit the 500-character shared budget, whether hashtags are within the limit that keeps them from being ignored entirely. Those are facts. Everything else marketed as an SEO score is a guess dressed as a number.
Why do two videos get scores out of different totals?+
Because some checks only exist when there is something to check. Give it a target keyword and it scores keyword placement in the title, description and tags; leave it blank and those checks are absent rather than failed. The percentage is always out of what applied to your input.
Where does the 150-character description fold come from?+
That is roughly how much of a description YouTube shows before the 'more' cut on the watch page, and it is what search snippets quote. A keyword below the fold is still indexed; it just never gets read by a human deciding whether to click.
Do tags still matter?+
Barely, and much less than tag-focused tools imply. YouTube has said titles, thumbnails and descriptions carry far more weight. Tags are worth filling in because they cost nothing and catch misspellings your title cannot — not because they will lift a video.
Can I check a video I have not published yet?+
That is the main use. Type the title, description and tags straight in and score them before you upload. The paste-a-URL mode exists for auditing something already live, including a competitor's.
