The parser pulls the 11-character ID out of the /vi/<id>/ segment, then re-probes every resolution — so you always see the full ladder, even if the URL you pasted was only the default size.
Which should I use?
Ninety percent of the time the answer is Option A — paste the YouTube link and let the tool discover the best available resolution. Reach for Option B when you already have the direct image URL in your clipboard and don't want to fetch the video page just to extract the ID.

The original YouTube source is JPG. PNG and WebP are optional browser conversions; they change the file format, not the amount of visual detail. YT.Tools does not present an enlarged image as a native 4K thumbnail.

Where do the image files come from?+
JPG thumbnails are fetched from YouTube's public i.ytimg.com image CDN. When you choose PNG or WebP, YT.Tools downloads the source JPG and converts it in your browser without increasing the original resolution.
What happens to the URL I paste?+
The video ID is extracted in your browser. When you request a download, the server function receives only the public video ID and selected quality needed to retrieve the image. The page does not create an account history, and PNG or WebP conversion happens locally in the browser.
